Teams leave Airtable for four different reasons and each one points somewhere else. Cost at scale → Baserow, NocoDB or Teable, all open source and self-hostable. Record limits → the same three, or a real database. Needing permissions Airtable cannot express → a custom build. Outgrowing the grid entirely → an actual application, because the thing you built is no longer a table with views on it. Notion databases and Smartsheet are lateral moves that solve none of the above. Work out which reason is yours before shortlisting, because the tool that fixes cost is rarely the one that fixes permissions.
Most Airtable alternative lists rank spreadsheet-database hybrids. The useful question is why you are leaving, because two of the four common reasons are not solved by another grid.
The four exit reasons
Cost at scale. The per-seat price multiplied by everyone who needs read access. This is the most common reason and the easiest to solve.
Record and attachment limits. You hit a ceiling on a base and the upgrade costs more than the problem.
Permissions you cannot express. Field-level access, row-level access by user, an approval step before a record changes. Airtable's model is base and table shaped, and organisations are not.
It stopped being a table. Conditional logic, multi-step processes, external users, an audit trail. At that point you are maintaining an application inside a grid, and every workaround is load-bearing.

The alternatives, by exit reason
Leaving on cost or limits: Baserow, NocoDB and Teable are the real answers, all open source with self-hosting. Baserow is the closest to a drop-in replacement for the Airtable experience. NocoDB is different in a way worth understanding — it puts a grid interface on top of a database you already have, which is ideal if the data belongs in Postgres anyway and wrong if you want a standalone base. Teable is newer and built for larger row counts.
Self-hosting is the actual saving and the actual cost. A server, backups, upgrades and someone responsible for all three. If nobody will own that, the hosted tier of an open-source tool is the honest comparison rather than the free one.
Leaving on permissions: none of the grid tools fundamentally change this. They have their own permission models, better than Airtable's in places, and they are still base-and-table shaped. If you need "this user sees only their own rows, this field is visible to managers, and changing this field requires approval", that is application logic. What migration actually costs
Data exports cleanly. Everything else does not. Automations are platform-specific and get rebuilt. Formula fields differ in syntax and edge-case behaviour. Linked records map to foreign keys with decisions to make about cascade behaviour. Attachments need somewhere to live. Views are a rebuild.
