Why Almost Half a Million Developers Starred One Repo
Few repositories on GitHub have been starred more than public-apis — the guide puts it at over 480,000, among the top three on the entire platform. That number is the interesting part. Stars are developers bookmarking something they expect to come back to, and this is the thing a very large share of them decided they'd need again.
What they bookmarked is a single community-maintained directory of free public APIs.
What's Behind the Stars
Around 1,400 APIs across roughly fifty categories. For a side project that means you scan one table instead of an afternoon of searching: live weather, movie and TV databases, real-time crypto prices, sports stats, finance data, NASA and space data, games, animals and dozens more.
Each entry tells you the three things that decide whether you can actually use it — whether it needs auth, whether it's served over HTTPS, and whether it supports CORS for calls from the browser.
Use It Like a Menu
Start from the feature you want to build rather than from the list. Need a dashboard with live numbers? Head to finance or crypto. A weekend toy? Space, games or animals. Pick the category, check the auth and CORS columns, grab the endpoint, ship.
